Η οικογένιά μου (My family)

Remember the words for ‘brother’ and ‘sister’ – ο αδερφός and η αδερφή?

Two more important family-related words to know are ο πατέρας and η μητέρα. These words for ‘father’ and ‘mother’ have the same Proto-Indo-European roots as ‘paternal’ and ‘maternal’.

Aside from these very common words, πατέρας, μητέρα, αδερφός, and αδερφή, you will of course want to know the terms for your own family members. There’s a handy family tree with some of the most important kinship terms on page 8 of Λοιπόν, τι λες; (Well, what do you say?).

It’s not necessary to remember every single family term at this point. All you need to know aside from the four important terms introduced above are the words for the members of your own immediate family.

Now, look carefully at the picture on page 40 of Ελληνικά Τώρα (Greek Now) 1+1, then listen to the description on the Nostos website. Don’t worry about not being able to understand everything at this point. You’ll hear plenty of new words, like μεγάλος (big), καλός (good), and όμορφος (beautiful), but you don’t need to understand them in order to complete the activities underneath.
